I think that that is the bit "BUT" when saying that reading everything isn't necessary. It is beneficial to be familiar with famous works and classic stories because you reap the benefits when reading novels that allude to them. With the internet as a ready tool, we can become familiar with things without having to read it completely. Thus, if I see a reference to something to do with a white what, I can search online and learn about Moby Dick and Melville without necessarily having to read the whole book. (Of course, anyone who fails to read Moby Dick is missing out). There is definite value to reading books that are often considered canon.
